- Wanaque works on getting grant money for Back Beach tennis courtsPosted on: 2011-06-02The borough will apply for grant money that, if won, will go toward renovations of two tennis courts and light fixtures in Back Beach Park. Borough Administrator Tom Carroll talked about the borough requesting money from the Passaic County Open Space & Farmland Preservation Trust Fund at the May 8 Mayor and Council meeting. On May 8, the Mayor and Council passed a resolution allowing the grant application process to take place. The tennis courts can be found in Back Beach, which is located at the end of Fourth Avenue in the Haskell section. The tennis courts are 20 years old and were originally built with money from the state Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program. According to Carroll, the borough expected the developer of the Valley View project to redo the tennis courts. Valley View was a proposed 114-unit project that has stalled in its construction because the developer is in foreclosure. However, very unsightly cracks – maybe inches wide – run through the courts' surface, crying out for attention. 'We can't wait any longer,' Carroll said. 'There are a number of cracks that can be a hazard. The courts are well used, and they need to be addressed.' If eligible for the Passaic County Open Space grant, the borough will not only work on the tennis courts, but also the four light fixtures that flank the court area. The lights are fixed on wooden poles and are 20 years old. Though equipped with new lamps 10 years ago, the lighting is not energy efficient, Carroll said. 'All the infrastructure is there,' he said. 'It's just a matter of replacing the poles and replacing the lights.' The borough is still working on getting an estimate for the overhaul project so officials could get a better idea of how much grant money to seek. Councilman Edward Leonard asked Carroll about what surface material options would be available for the tennis courts. Carroll replied that once an estimate comes in and a grant application is filed, borough officials can talk details such as court surface material. In a phone interview, Leonard said he liked Carroll's answer. 'I'm glad he gave that response because I'd like to see the options we have and what's affordable and not affordable,' he said.Email:edmond@northjersey.com
